The American ambassador to France, Charles Kushner, called French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot on Tuesday after he ignored a summons on Monday regarding comments made following the death of a far-right student.
Kushner has now promised that he will no longer interfere in French public debate, AFP has learned from Barrot's entourage.
"The minister reiterated the reasons that led to the invitation: France cannot accept any form of interference or manipulation of its national debate by the authorities of a third country," said the source close to the minister. Barrot and Kushner will meet later this week.
"The ambassador took note, expressed his willingness not to interfere in our public debate and emphasised the Franco-American friendship," the entourage added.
Kushner, father of Trump's son-in-law Jared, was called to account following the Trump administration's statements on the death of French far-right student Quentin Deranque. In its first official response to Deranque's death in France on Friday, the American government denounced "extreme left-wing violence" and called for those responsible to be brought to justice.
