Brussels’ public transport operator STIB will be reinforcing its tram, bus and metro services and making them free on 31 December to help the city’s residents move around in a safe and easy way on New Year’s Eve.

All metro and tram lines, as well as the Noctis night buses, will be reinforced and the timetables will be extended from 11:00 PM until the early hours of 1 January 2022, while the whole network will be free of charge from midnight until the end of the service, STIB announced.

The metros and trams will run until 2:00 AM, and from 11:00 PM onwards, there will be a metro every ten minutes on all metro lines. Trams will run at the same frequency as in the evening.

The Noctis buses will run until 5:00 AM and will run at a frequency of one bus every 15 or 20 minutes depending on the bus line. The complete service schedule can be found on the STIB website.

To ensure the service can continue virtually throughout the entire night, almost 500 drivers, dispatchers and field staff are on standby.

Meanwhile, Flemish public transport operator De Lijn announced that it will not be implementing an extended New Year’s Eve service, citing the fact that bars and restaurants are closing their doors at 11:00 PM and that most large-scale events are cancelled. However, night buses will run in the region’s larger cities.
