A five-year-old boy found in a tunnel under Antwerp Central rail station on Monday died from injuries sustained when being hit by a moving locomotive, Flemish prosecutors said Tuesday after studying CCTV.
The Antwerp Crown Prosecutor said experts were able to ascertain from the footage that the boy was hit and killed by the train at 14h41, less than half an hour after he was reported missing.
The boy entered the station complex alone and accessed the tunnel from a platform, prosecutors told Belga News Agency.
The tragedy temporarily stopped rail traffic and triggered an outpouring of condolences on social media.
