Almost half of all new-build homes with an application year of 2023 had an "E-level" lower than 0, Statistics Flanders revealed on Wednesday. This means that these homes generate more energy than they consume.

With a view to climate targets, the requirements for new-build homes are becoming increasingly strict. This is also evident from the average E-level.

The lower this figure, the more energy-efficient a home is. In 2023, 47.1% of all new-build homes had an E-level lower than 0. That is 10 percentage points more than the previous year, up from about 37%.

The average E-level in 2023 was 1. Single-family homes (E0) score significantly lower than apartments (E10). In any case, the E-level is considerably lower than the legal requirement, which is E30.

Statistics Flanders further notes that these are provisional figures for 2023, as the analysed number is based on a limited number of declarations.
