Six suspects were arrested during a large-scale police operation conducted by the Brussels-West police district as part of the fight against drug-related problems in the Brunfaut and Bonnevie neighbourhoods, the district announced Wednesday.

After questioning and being presented to the public, they were all remanded in custody by the investigating judge.

In total, nine searches were carried out at various locations in the neighbourhood. Simultaneously, several apartment buildings in the Brunfaut district were also thoroughly searched by different police departments.

This operation was part of a broader approach aimed at detecting potential caches of drugs, weapons, and proceeds of criminal activity.

During the searches, investigators discovered, among other things, a telescopic baton, a Glock pistol, and a UZI submachine gun. Significant quantities of narcotics and criminally obtained property were also seized, according to the police.

The Brussels-West police district (Molenbeek-Saint-Jean/Jette/Ganshoren/Berchem-Sainte-Agathe/Koekelberg) considers this action part of a broader structural approach to combating the drug problem in the Bonnevie and Brunfaut districts.

In recent months, the district has observed a resurgence of drug trafficking, intimidation, and associated violence.

Police services have pledged to continue their "relentless" efforts to curb the phenomenon in these neighbourhoods deemed vulnerable. The stated objective is to target drug dealers, storage locations, and logistical structures linked to the trafficking, to restore calm and improve the quality of life for residents.
