The Anderlecht social welfare centre (CPAS-OCMW) is tightening security measures for its staff following a series of violent incidents, including an attack last week that injured a security guard and two police officers.
The altercation occurred last Wednesday morning when an aggressive man disrupted operations at CPAS headquarters. Police intervened after staff reported the individual, who had already assaulted a security guard.
Upon the officers’ arrival, the man injured one of them while resisting arrest. A canine unit helped subdue him, and he has since been arrested. Two police officers sustained injuries during the incident.
According to CPAS chairman Guy Wilmart, the suspect claimed his mobile phone had been stolen while charging. When asked to remain calm by the security guard, he responded with violence. After attacking a police officer, the man barricaded himself inside a maintenance booth, causing property damage.
The centre closed on Wednesday afternoon, citing "a serious attack on staff" as the reason. A sign on the door confirmed services would resume on Thursday morning. The municipality of Anderlecht has expressed solidarity with CPAS staff.
The Brussels-Midi police zone and local prosecutors are investigating the case to determine its exact circumstances. Anderlecht has emphasised its commitment to combating violence, particularly verbal aggression, against municipal employees. A briefing on the incident is scheduled for this week.
