Anderlecht is Brussels’ most animal-friendly municipality, according to animal welfare organisation GAIA, followed closely by Schaerbeek and Ixelles.
The ranking comes from their surveys into the animal policies of every Brussels municipality, Bruzz reports.
The municipality of Jette came in in last place, but its score of 78% is still considered a good one, GAIA says.
The organisation especially applauded the fact that the Brussels Region now has 18 aldermen for animal welfare, compared to just six in 20187. Molenbeek-Saint-Jean is the only municipality without one.

The questionnaire was sent out between June and December of 2021 and revolved around 10 themes, including the implementation of a comprehensive programme for the management of stray cats, the control of the pigeon population in an animal-friendly manner, the absence of live animals at markets, the ban on fireworks and the impossibility of obtaining a permit for home slaughter.
GAIA plans to conduct a second survey in 2024, just before the municipal elections, to assess six years of local politics.
Saint-Gilles, Koekelberg and Berchem-Sainte-Agathe did not respond to the surveys GAIA sent regarding animal policies, and were thus not ranked.
