The Cameroonian rapper La Mélo du Quartier, also known as Snoopy la Mélodie, announced on Thursday that his concert in Liège scheduled for 30 May will not take place.
The cancellation comes after controversy surrounding the artist’s song lyrics, which include calls for violence against gay people, such as the phrase “Poignardez les pédés” (“Stab the faggots”) in one of his tracks.
The announcement of his performance in Liège sparked backlash from the local LGBTQIA+ community, which demanded that the event be cancelled. Mayor Willy Demeyer (PS) had requested a police report to determine whether action should be taken.
In the end, the rapper decided to cancel the concert himself. In a statement shared on his Facebook page, his team addressed the public, the Liège community, and LGBTQ+ communities directly, expressing a desire for openness and respect.
The post explained that the decision arose from “a conscious and deliberate choice: respecting the values shared by the community, promoting harmonious coexistence in society, and preserving social peace.”
