Marc De Mesel, Belgian YouTube crypto personality and millionaire, has disappeared in Kenya after being suspected by the authorities of money laundering and being part of an “international criminal organisation.”

In December, the Belgian crypto-millionaire came under judicial surveillance for giving €800,000 to a 21-year-old Kenyan woman. De Mesel is rumoured to be a polygamist, offering large sums of money to young African women. The Flemish crypto expert also gave €850,000 to an unknown university student of the same age.

The Belgian national is currently under investigation by the Kenyan authorities. The Asset Recovery Agency (ARA) suspects De Mesel of recruiting women for nefarious purposes.

Vague statement

In September 2021, Kenyan police raided the millionaire's home in relation to suspicious payments made to his girlfriend. De Mesel, in a video on YouTube, stated that there was nothing suspicious about the payments.

“My girlfriend told them that the money was a gift from me, that we’re in a relationship with kids, and she’s pregnant. Normally they leave you alone after this explanation. You don’t have to pay taxes on donations here,” De Mesel explained. “We’ve been living in fear ever since, we’re afraid they will come back.

Kenyan courts had previously asked for the millionaire's assets be frozen out of fear that they “may be criminal.” De Mesel’s lawyers stated that previous court summons had been “vague.”

De Mesel, now in his forties, started investing in 1999 but began to trade cryptocurrency in 2012, quickly finding his fortune. On social media, De Mesel shows off his Mclaren supercars and often poses with his girlfriend.

However, the billionaire’s fortunes have changed in recent years. In a YouTube post from Kenya on March 23, the Belgian posted that he had lost 80% of his investment portfolio.

Authorities now suspect that he has fled Kenya, crossing the border with Tanzania on foot. De Mesel still posts on social media, but has refused to state his whereabouts.
