Vehicle registrations in Belgium down in first quarter of 2022

Registrations of new private vehicles totalled 103,146 in the first quarter of 2022, a 13.5% drop compared to the corresponding period of 2021, Belga News Agency reports, citing figures from the Mobility Department and Belgium’s federation of car and cycle industries, Febiac.

The drop, which was particularly marked in March (-17.7%) is attributable to difficulties in obtaining electronic inputs and uncertainties linked to the war in Ukraine, the two entities said.

Febiac also notes a difference between the market for individual vehicles, which contracted by -26.6% at the end of the first quarter, and the company vehicle market, which managed to keep its results close to those obtained in the first three months of 2021, dropping by just 1.9%.

Like private vehicles, light utility vehicles experienced their third consecutive monthly decline, with registrations down by 28.2% in March. Total registrations for the quarter, at 15,118, were 32.4% lower than in January-March 2021.
