A call for tenders to procure the EU’s initial space weather service was published on 5 June, with bids due by 20 July 2026.

The tender covers a new service under the Space Weather Events (SWE) subcomponent of the EU Space Programme, following the European Commission’s adoption of an implementing decision selecting a space weather service, the European Commission announced on Monday.

Space weather refers to changes in the space environment driven by solar activity — such as solar flares, coronal mass ejections and shifts in the solar wind and magnetic fields — and can interfere with satellites and other space systems.

Radiation storms linked to space weather can damage satellite electronics and, in some cases, leave satellites unusable, while geomagnetic storms can increase atmospheric drag and alter satellite paths, making it harder to manage and coordinate space traffic.

EU space weather activities are being carried out by the European Space Agency as part of the Space Situational Awareness (SSA) component of the EU Space Programme.

What the service is meant to cover

SWE is part of the SSA framework — an EU programme area focused on monitoring and understanding the space environment — and the planned service is intended to support sectors that could be affected by space weather events, the Commission said.

The tender documents were published via the European Space Agency’s procurement portal, with the submission deadline set for 20 July 2026.
