The European Union has acknowledged Zambia’s announced results from the 13 August general elections, including the re-election of President Hakainde Hichilema.
The results were announced by the Electoral Commission of Zambia, according to a statement dated 20 August by the European External Action Service (EEAS).
An EU Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) was deployed across the country after being invited by the Zambian authorities, reflecting the EU’s continued support for Zambia’s democratic governance.
The EU EOM said in preliminary findings that election day was calm overall, voting was generally conducted efficiently, and voters were offered a competitive choice.
It added that restrictions on campaigning and advantages associated with incumbency contributed to what it described as an uneven playing field.
Counting concerns raised
The latest EU EOM statement reported serious incidents and procedural irregularities during the counting and tabulation — the process of compiling and confirming results — which it said affected the transparency and credibility of the process.
The EU called on stakeholders to address any grievances peacefully and constructively as the electoral process continues.
Any disputes should be handled through established legal procedures and any reported violence should be investigated with full accountability.
The EU said it valued its long-standing partnership with Zambia and was ready to continue working with the country.
