Brussels needs 80 additional federal judicial police officers to carry out thorough investigations and dismantle criminal networks, Saint-Gilles mayor Jean Spinette has said after a series of shootings.

Spinette, a Socialist Party politician, said Brussels “deserves respect” and should receive the same resources as Antwerp.

The mayor spoke by phone on Sunday morning with Brussels public prosecutor Julien Moinil to discuss the situation.

He also called for more resources for the public prosecutor’s office, extra places in a youth detention facility and wider powers to deport people without legal residence status who are involved in crime.

According to Spinette, merging Brussels’ police zones would not in itself be a sufficient solution.
