Security staff at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport will stage a series of short walkouts on Tuesday and Wednesday in protest against rising workloads, a move expected to disrupt passenger and cargo screening.
Security staff at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport will stage a series of short walkouts on Tuesday and Wednesday in protest against rising workloads, a move expected to disrupt passenger and cargo screening.
The action has been confirmed by the FNV trade union.
On Tuesday, staff will stop work for 15 minutes at 10.00, 14.00 and 19.00 Hrs local time.
On Wednesday, there will be five 15-minute stoppages at 10.00, 12.00, 14.00, 16.00 and 19.00 Hrs.
During these periods, passengers are expected to be unable to pass through security, which could lead to long queues. Cargo checks are also likely to be affected.
The union said agreements had been made with the airport to ensure minimum staffing levels and to allow the walkouts to take place safely.
“In the event of an emergency, safety always comes first and the action can be suspended,” FNV said.
Earlier this year, Schiphol reduced the number of security companies operating at the airport from five to three in an effort to gain more control over service delivery.
Since then, however, workloads have risen sharply, according to the union. Another union, CNV, had previously threatened strikes if no commitments were made.
