Several hundred mostly antifascist protesters gathered near Brussels Central Station on Saturday morning, where police blocked their march after earlier demonstrations and unrest in the city.
The crowd assembled at about 10:00 after calls to take to the streets again following protests and riots last Friday and Monday.
For the time being, those present appeared to be mainly antifascist demonstrators rather than pupils from French-speaking schools.
The group chanted antifascist slogans as well as chants directed against the police.
Brussels police were out in large numbers in the area and had already stopped and searched several people during the morning.
Shortly before 11:00, the demonstration began to move, first towards Place de l’Albertine and then up Mont des Arts.
However, police blocked the protesters’ way on the steps of Mont des Arts.
For a moment, it appeared the demonstrators might confront the police, but after a few minutes they turned back.
Chants against the police were still being heard as the situation continued.
