About 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died since the start of the Russian invasion on 24 February, according to Oleksiy Arestovich, an advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The figure was quoted during an interview with Mr Arestovich, aired on Friday on YouTube, Belga News Agency reports.

Ukraine’s Defence Minister, Oleksii Reznikov, had said early this week that about 100 Ukrainian soldiers were being killed each day. Arestovich confirmed this figure and said that his country had suffered similar losses since the start of the war. When asked whether that meant a total of 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed, he said, “Yes, about that number.”

Both Russia and Ukraine have been vague about the exact number of casualties due to the fighting. According to Arestovich, the Russians have been suffering greater losses. Artillery strikes conducted on Friday were particularly effective, said the adviser, who estimated that about 600 Russian soldiers were killed on that day alone.
