The European Union said it will work with international partners at the COP31 UN Climate Change Conference in Antalya, Turkey, from 9 to 20 November to accelerate global climate action in line with the Paris Agreement.

The meeting will focus on “concrete action” to implement the Paris Agreement and follow up on the first Global Stocktake — a UN process that reviews collective progress towards the agreement’s goals, the European Commission said in a statement on Friday.

It linked the EU approach to “clean electrification” — using electricity instead of fossil fuels where possible — alongside wider deployment of renewable energy and technologies, moving away from fossil fuels, and mobilising investment.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated the EU was “on track to become the first climate-neutral continent” and was “mobilising climate finance” to support the clean energy transition.

EU highlights mitigation, adaptation and resilience

EU Commissioner for Climate, Net-Zero and Clean Growth Wopke Hoekstra described COP31 as “the COP of implementation” and said the world must limit a “1.5°C overshoot”, adding that this would require both cutting emissions and strengthening adaptation measures.

Hoekstra said the EU would keep its focus on mitigation “in particular through clean electrification”, and referred to efforts on “global resilience” to climate impacts.
