Nine suspects arrested for online fraud that trapped several Belgians

Nine suspects were arrested during a major police operation carried out on Tuesday against a Dutch gang suspected of having set up an online fraud, which has claimed dozens of Belgian victims, announced the East Flanders Public Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday evening.

Dutch police dismantled the network earlier. The band of criminals lured its victims to fake banking websites using Whatsapp messages, text messages and emails. The stolen loot amounts to several million euros.

The Ghent police investigated phishing, internet fraud and money laundering in Aalter with the support of the Federal Judicial Police, the Dutch police and the Amsterdam Public Prosecutor’s Office in order to find the first cases in Belgium of this network.

The East Flanders Prosecutor’s Office, which has a group specialising in cybercrime, has taken the lead in operations elsewhere in Flanders. This collaboration led to searches on Tuesday at 24 addresses across the Netherlands and the arrest of nine suspects.
