The international home rental platform Airbnb, which enables people to rent short-term lodging, has permanently banned customers from holding parties in accommodation they book through the platform.
The company had previously introduced a temporary party ban during the Covid-19 pandemic, as lodgings were often booked to hold lockdown parties.
"Over time, the party ban became much more than a public health measure. It developed into a bedrock community policy to support our hosts and their neighbours," Airbnb said in a statement, adding that the number of party-related complaints has dropped by 44% since the ban's implementation.
While the platform does not give a clear definition of a party, the company statement seems to imply that Airbnb draws the line at nuisance and complaints from neighbours.

Additionally, hosts can no longer indicate that parties are allowed at their property. Open-invite gatherings, such as Facebook events, have long been prohibited. “Party house” properties will continue to be strictly prohibited as well.
Additionally, the 16-person occupancy cap that was in force during the pandemic will also be lifted, as the company believes that "responsible" family celebrations and group outings should remain possible.
Anyone who does not abide by the rules risks being suspended or thrown off the platform. Last year, more than 6,600 members were suspended for this reason.
