Some major roads in Brussels will no longer be filled with traffic, as the Brussels Region’s Good Move plan for improved mobility offers new ways of getting around the city. Many traffic changes are expected, as the following streets will be prohibited for cars as of 16 August, Le Soir reports.
Works to improve circulation in the city centre will start on 4 July.
There will be no more car traffic on Rue Royale in either direction, with exceptions for public transport and priority vehicles, between Rue de la Loi and Rue de Louvain. Automatic cameras will flash offending vehicles and there will be traffic filters that can only be passed by buses, trams, cyclists and emergency services.
Place de Louvain will be widened to create a loop from Rue de l’Enseignement towards Rue Croix de Fer. Bollards will be placed in front of the Paul bakery and driving on Rue du Congrès will be prohibited in both directions, except for public transport and priority vehicles.
Traffic on Avenue de Stalingrad will be reduced to one-way traffic, as previously agreed on by the district.
The Place de la Liberté will be enlarged and have its access limited to emergency services.
Place de la Vieille Halle aux Blés will be pedestrianised like other parts of the centre, while the adjoining Rue du Chêne, Rue de Etuve and Rue de Villers will be connected to the historic centre.
Around Place de l’Yser, there will be a mandatory right turn coming from the Quai du Commerce towards the tunnel and coming from the Boulevard de Dixmude. Quai de Willebroeck will be accessible via the Petite Ceinture, the ring road around the city.
Place Sainte-Catherine will have a one-way layout, meaning motorists coming from the quays will have to turn left onto Rue de Laeken.
The part from Square Marguerite Duras to Porte du Rivage will be pedestrianised, as well as the connection of the Place de la Chapelle to the skatepark, which will have limited access to emergency services and separate bus lanes.

The central berm on Rue de la Senne will widen and there will be a new square, while access to garages and access for emergency services will be maintained.
The Rue des Foulons will be one-way in the opposite direction of Rue du Vautour, with the aim to reduce speeding.
The Rue des Riches-Claires between Saint-Christophe and Van Artevelde will become a school street, meaning it will be reserved for pedestrians and cyclists.
Rue des Six Jetons will only offer limited access to Place Fontainas for emergency services and buses by means of a dedicated bus stop.
There will be a reversal of the one-way street on Rue des Ursulines to reduce the amount of traffic in the streets of the Stalingrad and Rouppe districts.
On Rue du Canon and Rue du Marais, traffic filters will be installed to increase safety in the school surroundings, while access will be maintained for pedestrians, cyclists, garage users and emergency services.
Rue du Gentilhomme will also become an area with limited access for cyclists, buses, taxis, garage and emergency services.
Rue du Marché aux Porcs will be one-way from Rue Locquenghien to Rue Léon Lepage, Leaving the city via Dansaert and the Petite Ceinture ring road.
From Rue du Miroir to Rue du Faucon, a pedestrian zone will be created after the redevelopment, as part of the Les Marolles Sustainable Neighbourhood Contract. Rue du Rempart des Moines will see partial pedestrianisation after redevelopment as part of the School Contract.
Rue Haute between J. Stevens and Empereur will turn into a pedestrian zone, with a passage maintained for buses and emergency services.
The area between Rue de Flandre and Rue Léon Lepage will be a limited access area with retractable bollards, meaning residents, traders, delivery people, people with garages and emergency services will keep access.
A project is to be developed on Rue Namur in consultation with residents and traders in order to reduce traffic in the street.
For Rue Ravenstein, Rue des Douze Apôtres and Rue Montagne du Parc, pedestrianisation is planned after the redevelopment of the Marché au Bois.
Finally, on Rue Van Artevelde between Rue Dansaert and Rue Six Jetons, there will be a one-way inversion and access for buses, bikes and taxis in the opposite direction. For Rue Dansaert, there will be one-way traffic from Van Artevelde to the Vieux Marché aux Grains, while there will be access for buses, bikes and taxis in the opposite direction.
