With the summer holidays now among us, Airbnb revealed the must-see Belgian destinations that are the most frequented on the platform — at the top of the list were the coast and Flemish countryside.
According to the rental accommodation service, De Haan, De Panne and Nieuwpoort top the list of trendy destinations after recording the highest increase in the number of French people looking for accommodation on the platform. These are followed by Mechelen, Ypres, Heuvelland, Koksijde, Ostend, Genk and Houthalen-Helchteren.
While the platform allows travellers to find a place to stay during their visit that can be a more economical alternative to a hotel, those who host them benefit as well.
The platform claims that Belgian hosts earned an average of €4,500 a year by renting out their property through its channel, according to a survey by Airbnb from 1 June until 31 December last year. Hosts in Flanders and Wallonia bring in more money than those in the Brussels Region, however, earning €5,000 and €3,000 respectively.

This additional income is used on necessities by 40% of the hosts, while one in five said they will have to rely on it more in the next year.
Almost half of the Belgian hosts said they do put the money toward improving their accommodations. Even more hosts (55%) said they made an effort in making guests’ stay more sustainable by providing necessary tools for recycling and composting, and 44% said they did so by providing cleaning supplies that were less harmful to the environment.
