The European sand sculpture championship kicked off on the Belgian coast in Middelkerke on Wednesday morning. Six selected artists will challenge each other with their skilful sculpturing until 19 July.

The theme of the championship, which has been organised by the World Sand Sculpting Academy (WSSA), is “The origin of everything”. The WSSA has selected six international artists from Ukraine, Ireland, Czechia, Lithuania, Bulgaria and Spain.

The competition takes place within the framework of the Middelkerke sand sculpture festival, which is taking place from 1 July to 11 September 2022.

Visitors to the event will be able to admire the artists at work from Wednesday morning to July 19, the day of the judging of the works and the awarding of prizes, and the works of art of the participants will remain visible throughout the duration of the festival.

In 2021, about 4,000 tons of sand were used for the sculptures. For the new edition, an estimated 6,000 tons will be used to create sand sculptures.
