The Belgian Parliament’s Justice Committee decided on Wednesday to request written opinions on a bill to reform the Data Protection Authority.

The bill was presented by the Secretary of State for Digitalization, Mathieu Michel.

The opposition unsuccessfully requested hearings. As he had promised, the Secretary of State for Digitalisation, Mathieu Michel, presented his data protection bill well before the parliamentary holidays. However, the general discussion and the vote will take place at the start of the school year, after the requested opinions are requested.

The list of experts who will be consulted is scheduled to be finalised next week.

The bill to amend the Data Protection Authority law “is drafted around three axes: strengthening its operation; strengthening its independence and strengthening pragmatic approaches and sectoral expertise,” Mathieu Michel indicated.

It aims in particular to transform the management committee into a collegiate body, clarify its powers and its functioning, and grant more leeway in its internal operations.
