Belgium’s federal government has extended a reduction of excise duty on diesel and gasoline to the end of the year, Finance Minister Vincent Van Peteghem announced on Friday after the latest Council of Ministers meeting.
The measure is meant to provide relief to consumers in the face of soaring energy prices. It was to have remained in effect, in principle, until the end of September.
The reduction amounts to 17.5 cents per litre – about €10 for a full tank.
Minister Van Peteghem has repeatedly proposed reducing excise duty on fuel to the European minimum, but the government has so far not agreed to his request.
