Heat-induced fires hit areas in Wallonia

Several fires sparked by high temperatures broke out in various locations in Picardy Wallonia's Mouscron area on Monday, as the harvest season progressed there and elsewhere in Belgium.

In Dottignies, fire devastated part of a freshly harvested field and, according to the firefighters, it was probably started by the overheating of an agricultural machine.

The farmer was able to extinguish the fire before the fire service arrived, thus preventing it from spreading. Only fifty square metres of the field were burned.

A few hours later, a tractor pulling a cartload of straw caught fire at Rue du Moulin Masure in Estaimpuis. The road was closed to allow firefighters to spread the burning straw on the public road and bring the blaze under control.

Finally, firefighters intervened to put out a brush fire in Barry, near Tournai, and a burning tree in Laplaigne, in the commune of Brunehaut.
