What supermarkets are open on Belgium's National Day?

While the National Day celebrations may be in full swing, some of us still need to stock the cupboards – no easy feat in Belgium during a national holiday. Here is a non-exhaustive list of the availability of major supermarkets in the country today.

Colruyt

Unfortunately for shoppers across the country, affordable supermarket Colruyt does not open on public holidays: all its stores, including those under the Okay brand, will remain closed today.

Delhaize

The Delhaize supermarket chain is not as straightforward. Belgian shoppers are advised to look at the chain’s official website to see whether their local store is open. Do not trust Google Maps, as the information listed is often wrong.

As a general rule, the main Delhaize locations will be closed today, but the company’s independent brand stores, such as AD, Proxy, and Shop&Go, are likely to be open.

Carrefour

Much like Delhaize, some of Carrfour’s independent stores, such as Market and Express, will be open today, while most of the company’s main supermarkets and hypermarkets will remain closed. Customers are again advised to check the company’s website for information about their local store.

Albert Heijn

Certain Albert Heijn locations will remain open today. In most major Flemish cities, at least one store will remain open to customers. A list of shops that are open today can be found on the Dutch supermarket’s website.

Intemarché

Good news for holiday shoppers: all branches of French supermarket chain Intemarché will be open today. The supermarket chain currently operates exclusively in Wallonia, however, some locations can be reached by car in 30 minutes from Brussels.

SPAR

SPAR locations will remain open across the country today, which should allow locals to at least stock up on essentials.
