On the E34 motorway near Sint-Anna Linkeroever just outside of Antwerp, a truck driver died after he became unwell at the wheel. The lorry ended up perpendicular to the road, completely blocking the motorway in the direction of the coast.
The emergency services found the man unconscious and tried to resuscitate him, but he died at the scene, Jana Verdegem of the Federal Police told VRT. No other vehicles were involved in the accident, but the road was completely blocked in the direction of the coastal municipality of Knokke.
The lorry ended up in the wrong direction and blocked all lanes of the motorway, making it hard to remove the vehicle and causing a lot of traffic disruptions.
Drivers wanting to go to the coast via the Antwerp ring road in the direction of Ghent can no longer take the E34 motorway in the direction of Knokke after the Kennedy tunnel, and instead have to follow the E17 motorway.
Those coming from the Limburg province can take the E313 motorway to Antwerp and the coast can make a detour from the junction with the Antwerp ring road via the Liefkenshoek tunnel. That road, however, is no longer toll-free, but taking it does ensure that drivers will pass the accident and end up on the E34 motorway towards Knokke, avoiding problems.
