German Bundestag hoists the rainbow flag for the first time

The German Bundestag, housed in the Reichstag Palace where the German parliament sits, hoisted the rainbow flag of the LGBTQIA+ community on Saturday for the first time in its history.

Three multicoloured flags were hoisted on Saturday morning, on one of the towers of the building and in front of two of its entrances, on the occasion of “Christopher Street Day”.

This day, which commemorates an uprising of homosexual people against police aggression in New York in 1969, traditionally gives rise to a major march by defenders of the rights of sexual and gender minorities in Berlin.

Several hundred thousand people are expected at this year’s parade in the centre of the German capital city.

The German Ministry of Interior gave permission in April for the rainbow flag to be displayed on official federal buildings on certain occasions.
