A district in the suburbs of the Chinese city of Wuhan is under confinement after several coronavirus infections were confirmed there.

This is the first time the city has applied such provisions since 2020, the financial news agency Bloomberg reported.

Approximately one million people in Jiangxia district are affected and must remain confined to their homes. This new “lockdown” comes more than two years after the city experienced its first lockdown to contain what was, at the time, a mysterious lung disease.

The latest decision was taken following the detection on Tuesday of four asymptomatic cases. Public transport is also at a standstill, as are leisure areas, which are closed for three days.

For the moment, the constraints only apply to Jiangxia district, but the measure raises concerns about a probable extension of the provisions.

Since the first confinement in 2020, life for the 11 million inhabitants had largely returned to “normal” in Wuhan, although there was a small outbreak in April and a few cases were detected in the last month.

China maintains a “zero Covid” policy, using lockdowns, movement restrictions and large-scale testing, although the most contagious variants of the disease seem able to “bypass” all measures put in place.

On Tuesday 27 July, China recorded 604 cases, against 868 the day before.
