A 42-year-old Belgian was sentenced to 12 years in prison in Germany on Thursday for inflicting grievous bodily harm after throwing acid at German financial director Bernhard Günther.

Günther was the financial director of Innogy at the time when he was attacked at his home in 2018 by an assailant accompanied by another individual.

Günther has since stated in an interview that he was convinced the motive was "professional."

On 14 December 2021, the Belgian man was apprehended in the province of Luxembourg and subsequently extradited to Germany.

Despite his DNA being matched to the crime scene, the culprit maintained his innocence until the bitter end.

An investigation into the second suspect has been halted after a man was released due to a lack of evidence, despite Günther testifying that he recognised him.

Since the attack, Günther has had several operations, including eyelid and facial skin transplants; in court, he expressed his hope that the middlemen and the person who ordered the crime will be found after further investigation.
