Flemish civil servants take more and more parental leave

More and more Flemish civil servants are taking parental leave for half a day a week, according to a parliamentary report released by Flemish Minister of Domestic Administration Bart Somers.

Released at the request of Flemish MP Katrien Schryvers, the figures show that the number of public officials opting to take half a day off a week for parental leave now stands at 1,1165.

The year the leave was made available, only 66 civil servants used it, followed by 183 the year after.

The figures now show that in total about 6% of public staff take at least one day a week of parental leave every year.

Schryvers added that the proportion of women using this option is now at 63%, stating that "fathers still take less parental leave than mothers."
