A Belgian-British teenager, Mack Rutherford (17), is the youngest ever pilot to fly solo around the world after he landed at Sofia airport on Wednesday.

Rutherford made the last part of his journey on Wednesday, when he took off in Senica in Slovakia, and flew via Bratislava to Sofia in Bulgaria – where he also started his journey on 23 March this year.

Rutherford's sister, Zara, also flew around the world solo last year, and at the age of 19, became the youngest woman to do so.

“When I got my pilot license, I wanted to do something with it, but at first I did not really know what. When my sister did her solo flight around the world, I decided I wanted to do the same,” Rutherford told reporters.

Until now, the world record was still held by the 18-year-old Brit Travis Ludlow.
