In the city of Waremme, near Liège, the cover from the engine of an aeroplane landed on the garage roof of a local’s house, Belgian broadcaster RTBF reports. The cover belongs to the engine of a Boeing 747-400 aircraft.
An Air Atlanta flight, bound for Malta, took off from Liège Airport at midnight on 8 September. Passing overhead, the cover came loose, plummeting onto the property below. The debris was removed by local firefighters early in the morning and delivered to airport authorities for further investigation.
The aircraft has now been impounded in Malta awaiting repairs and further investigation.
The roof, belonging to Louis Demaret and his wife, was heavily damaged by the falling debris. Broken tiles will need to be replaced and a new frame installed.

Demaret and his wife spoke of their shock from the incident. At the time of the accident, their grandson was sleeping upstairs and narrowly avoided being hit.
Last year, a similar incident occurred with a plane taking off from Maastricht in the Netherlands. A plane was forced to land in Belgium when one of its engines exploded shortly after takeoff, with pieces of metal littering the Dutch village of Meersen, near the Belgian border. The debris wounded an elderly woman.
The plane made an emergency landing in nearby Liège Airport. The incident involved another Boeing 747-400 aircraft.
