Pope Francis arrived on Tuesday in Nur-Sultan, capital of Kazakhstan, for a three-day visit during which he will take part in an inter-religious congress, French news agency AFP reported.

The pope arrived shortly after 5:15 p.m. (1:15 p.m. Brussels time).

The 85-year-old pontiff is expected at the presidential palace to meet with President Kassym-Jomart Tokaev. He will then deliver a first speech to the authorities and the diplomatic corps in the early evening.

On Wednesday and Thursday, he will attend the Seventh Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, which will be held in Nur-Sultan.

The congress will be marked by the absence of Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill, amid tensions linked to the war in Ukraine.
