German ecologist Ska Keller has decided to resign as joint president of the Greens/European Free Alliance group in the European Parliament, leaving Belgium’s Philippe Lamberts temporarily as the sole head of the group.

The 40-year-old German MEP said she wants to make way for a new generation after years at the helm of the group. In addition, her resignation should give her enough time to adequately prepare for the 2024 European elections.

Ms. Keller added that the candidates for her succession now had the opportunity to make themselves known.

In the meantime, Lamberts (Ecolo), who had been joint president alongside Keller, will chair the group alone.

However, Keller will continue to sit in the European Parliament, where the Greens hold 72 of the 705 seats.
