In the face of rising energy prices, French-speaking universities in Belgium have decided to take collective action by limiting their room temperatures to 19°C.

The CRef body that reunites all of the French-speaking universities' rectors has announced its plans to combat the ongoing energy crisis.

In a press statement released on Thursday, they decried the "unmanageable rise in prices" on Belgians' energy bills, as well the consequences of global warming.

While acknowledging that there are no quick solutions to the ever-rising energy prices, the universities are of the belief that a general reduction in energy consumption will help push these prices down.

To that end, they have decided to limit the temperature of heated rooms in their universities to 19°C.

Furthermore, the universities will pursue further internal consultations on other energy saving measures, with the view of minimising the impact on both staff and students.

As a result, universities will continue their present sustainable development plans, which include expenditures to improve the energy performance of their facilities and the development of rationalised mobility.
