One in five employees of small and medium-sized enterprises in Belgium received a bicycle allowance in the first half of 2022, the Liantis human resources company reported on Thursday.

The number of workers cycling to work has been on the rise for a few years now. Compared to the first half of 2021, it increased by 3.6%, Liantis found, based on an analysis of data from 263,000 SME workers in connection with Mobility Week.

Since 1 January 2022, a new ceiling applies for the bicycle allowance: €0.25 per kilometre travelled. No social security contributions or taxes are payable on this amount.

The popularity of the bicycle is linked to rising fuel prices, which prompt some motorists to leave their cars at home.
