The first Belgian week against food waste will be on the menu next Monday, under the motto ‘7 Days Without Waste’. The week will be an initiative of Too Good To Go, a popular app against food waste.

September 29 is International Food Loss and Waste Day. Preventing food waste is an important part of the fight against climate change. Families can also do their bit, as estimations show that roughly half of food is wasted at home.

“In Belgium, no less than 345 kg of food is wasted per capita every year, making our country the worst student in the European class after the Netherlands,” the app states.

During Food Waste Week – from September 26 to October 2 – participants will be challenged to reduce food waste by adopting new habits and will receive tips and recipes to that end. Registration can be done on the Too Good To Go website.

“By launching '7 Days Without Waste', we hope that as many people as possible will realise that by adopting new and simple habits they can significantly reduce their food waste, which has a positive impact on the well-being of our planet and at the same time allows them to make serious savings," said Sien Van den broeke, Societal Impact Manager at Too Good To Go Belgium, in a press release.

Through the app, traders can still sell their surpluses of fresh food to consumers at lower prices.
