The trade unions representing railway employees in Belgium have issued a strike notice for 18 October, for the Federal Government to provide their workers with better resources.

In a press conference on Tuesday, the CGSP Cheminots, CSC Transcom, and SLFP Cheminots trade unions announced their plan to organise a 24-hour rail strike on 18 October  to demand improved resources for their workers in light of future federal budget discussions.

For them, it is time to "raise the alarm" and for the government to take immediate action to address the worsening of working conditions on the train network.

In particular, they are demanding better resources for the recruitment of staff as well as improving the well-being of railway workers.

"The ball is now in the government's court," according to the unions, as they have promised to go through with their threat if the federal authorities fail to provide a "concrete answer."

In the event of a strike, a minimum train circulation service will be implemented to replace probable train cancellations.
