Arms supplies to Ukraine heighten risk of direct war with US, Russia says

Massive arms transfers and the provision of intelligence to Ukraine by Washington bring the risk of a direct confrontation between the US and Russia closer, a senior Russian official said on Tuesday.

Konstantin Vorontsov, a deputy director at the Russian Foreign Ministry’s department for arms nonproliferation and control, issued the warning at a UN meeting in New York.

According to Vorontsov, the United States is not only supplying weapons to Ukraine, but is also providing key intelligence, which is making the war bloodier and longer. He also claimed that Washington has directly engaged parties who are participating in the war.

The sums being pumped into Ukraine are "historic," even for US observers. On Tuesday, Washington made an additional $625 million available to the Ukrainian armed forces.
