"The Passenger", the massive urban installation by Flemish artist Arne Quinze will be officially opened in the heart of Mons on December 6th. The work, made of wooden boards and standing 85 metres long, 40 metres wide and 16 metres tall, should take around 20 days to build and be finished on November 21st. It will connect Maison Losseau, the literary centre of Mons 2015, and the church of St. Elizabeth.
"The Passenger" required 35,000 metre of Douglas fir wood and pine to build, and will reside in Mons for the next 5 years. The monumental sculpture is the work of Flemish artist Arne Quinze with the help of twenty students of Mons' School of Fine Arts, "Arts au Carré".
Public works by Arne Quinze have already 'challenged' city centres in Belgium, Germany, Brazil, France, China, and the USA.
"Through my art, I want to confront people," said Arne Quinze, in Mons on Monday. "I want to give people access to culture, to encourage them to, you never know, walk through the door of a museum for a visit."
