In the Antwerp municipality of Edegem, a loud explosion occurred on Tuesday morning at 01:35. As a precaution, 75 people were temporarily evacuated Mayor Koen Metsu announced on Twitter.
The Antwerp public prosecutor’s office confirmed that the explosion was caused by malicious intent. It is not yet clear whether there is possibly a link with the drug trade, as has often been the case with similar incidents in the region.
A car was completely destroyed in the explosion, but an apartment building nearby was not damaged, although its residents were evacuated as a precaution and received in a hotel.
