Police in Brussels are investigating the suspicious death of a 60-year-old woman in the commune of Saint-Gilles. A spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office said the death had been made to look like a suicide.
Police in the commune received a call on Wednesday when the woman was seen hanging from the balcony of her fourth-floor apartment.
"We can confirm that on October 12, 2022, around 1.30 pm, the police of the Brussels South zone was asked to determine a hanging," said Public Prosecutor Willemien Baert.
"When police arrived, they confirmed the death of the victim, a 60-year-old woman born in 1962. The Brussels prosecutor's office was contacted and ordered several investigations," she told Bruzz.
Police established a perimeter while the coroner and the forensics team arrived at the scene. In the meantime the prosecutor’s office appointed an examining magistrate to oversee the investigation into possible foul play.
La Capitale newspaper reports that the woman’s husband has been taken into custody. However the legal services declined to confirm or deny his alleged involvement. “The judicial investigation is ongoing to clarify the exact circumstances," it said in a statement.
