Parliamentarian Georges Dallemand (Les Engagés) has urged the President of the Chamber of Representatives, Eliane Tillieux (PS), to organise an exchange of views with representatives of the intelligence services on the massive financing of foreign political parties by Russia and the role of hub that Belgium may be playing in that regard.

A month ago, several foreign media reported information from US intelligence that Vladimir Putin’s regime had transferred $300 million since 2014 to fund political parties around the world and plans to transfer hundreds of millions more. The parties are not named but the United States reportedly shared its information with the countries concerned.

According to a source quoted by French news agency AFP, Brussels reportedly serves as a hub for the transfers.

“The public sharing of this information highlights the major challenge posed by secret Russian political influence for democratic states,” Mr. Dallemand said in his letter.

He would like a parliamentary follow-up committee to organise an exchange of views in order to assess the threat ton Belgian territory and the measures taken.
