Grant Shapps, the former Transport Minister under Prime Minister Boris Johnson, is to become Britain’s new Home Secretary, several British media outlets reported on Wednesday.
He replaces Suella Braverman, who resigned on Tuesday night.
Shapps was a supporter of Rishi Sunak, Prime Minister Liz Truss’ main rival in the internal elections for a Conservative Party leader following the resignation of Boris Johnson. Truss sacked him as Transport Minister when she took office and replaced him with Anne-Marie Trevelyan.
At the Conservative Party's congress earlier this month, Shapps was one of the leading voices urging Truss to shelve her plans to scrap the top income tax bracket. At the same time, he warned the prime minister not to remain deaf to voters’ concerns about the rising cost of living.
