YouTube will soon certify the profiles of doctors and other healthcare professionals so that trustworthy videos on health topics get more attention, the video-sharing platform reported on Thursday.

The new feature will enable users to immediately identify quality videos on health topics, YouTube said. They will also be able to find and interact with content from health professionals on the platform.

Videos from verified health professionals can be identified by labels at the bottom of the video, which will provide additional context. Furthermore, users searching for a medical term will get a series of videos labelled 'from health sources' at the top of their search results.

The process to get certified, which includes verification of the user's qualifications, is also open to people working within mental health and within institutions. The aim is to curb the spread of disinformation.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, a huge amount of misinformation was spread online about the disease itself and about vaccination.
