Around 900 people took part in a demonstration against the Iranian regime on Saturday in front of Ghent’s city hall, under the slogan “Women, Life, and Freedom”.

The demonstrators were protesting against the death of Masha Amini last month. The 22-year-old died shortly after being arrested by “morality police" for wearing her headscarf inappropriately. Protests then broke out across Iran, brutally suppressed by the country's authorities.

The demonstrators in Ghent formed a large circle and waved Iranian flags in front of the city town hall. The demonstration echoed similar protests in other cities around the world this month. “It is our duty to carry the voices we hear inside Iran and to take this message to the world,” the organisers said. “This battle has turned into a revolution.”

At the core of today’s mobilisation is the association PS752justice, which brings together the families of the victims of flight PS752, a Ukrainian plane that was shot down over Iran in 2020. All 176 passengers in the plane were killed.
