After falling nine places last year, Belgium has moved up 10 to 39th in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI), a ranking of countries based on performance in the fight against climate change, placing it far below its neighbouring countries.

The CCPI evaluates 59 countries and the European Union, which together are responsible for over 90% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The index assesses four categories: Greenhouse Gas Emissions (40% of the overall score), Renewable Energy (20%), Energy Use (20%), and Climate Policy (20%). It is drawn up each year by environmental NGOs at the occasion of the COP.

As usual, there are no countries in the top places as the authors of the comparison do not deem any climate policies ambitious enough to reach the objective of containing global warming at +1.5°C.

Fourth place was therefore the most deserving country in the ranking. Once again this was awarded to Denmark, ahead of Sweden and Chile. As a whole, the EU ranks 19th; with the Netherlands at 13, Germany at 16 and France at 28.
