European football’s governing body, UEFA, announced on Wednesday that it has received three preliminary bids to host the 2028 and 2032 editions of the European football championship.
The four associations of the United Kingdom (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales) and the Republic of Ireland have submitted a joint bid to organise Euro 2028.
Turkey has submitted a bid for the 2028 and 2032 editions, while Italy has made a bid for Euro 2032.
Wednesday marked the deadline for the submission of preliminary bidding documents. Final bids must be submitted by 12 April 2023 and UEFA will designate the host countries in the autumn of 2023.
England – which had already organised Euro 1996 – and Scotland hosted 12 of the 51 matches in the last edition, which was held in the summer of 2021 in 11 different countries. The semi-finals and final were played in London.
The tournament was played in Italy in 1968 and 1980, but Turkey has never hosted it.
