Lithuania is accelerating its plans to purchase medium-range air defence systems in the wake of last week’s missile strike in neighbouring Poland.

An adviser to Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda announced the decision by the country's National Security Council on Monday.

The anti-aircraft systems are expected to be purchased next year and a decision on the details of the purchase is expected soon.

The adviser also referred to the 2023 NATO summit, which will take place in Lithuania, noting that it is a priority for Lithuania to work with its allies to design a regional air defence system.

Lithuania, which shares borders with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and Moscow-ally Belarus, views the war in Ukraine as a direct threat to its own national security.

The Baltic country already uses the NASAMS air defence system.
